N2XOH Cables

N2XOH Cable is a halogen-free, XLPE-insulated low-voltage power and distribution cable.

Designed for fixed installations where human safety and the protection of sensitive equipment are critical during a fire. Ideal for indoor wiring in highly populated or high-value public infrastructure such as hospitals, aeroportos, subway stations, commercial buildings, and data centers.

What does the N2XOH cable designation stand for?

The N2XOH naming convention follows standard European (DIN VDE) and South American (NTP) designations for power cables:

  • N: Indicates a standard copper conductor.
  • 2X: Denotes the XLPE (Cross-Linked Polyethylene) isolamento, which allows for a high continuous operating temperature of 90°C.
  • OH: Signifies a Halogen-Free Flame Retardant (HFFR / LSZH) bainha externa.

Because of its halogen-free and low-smoke properties, N2XOH is the standard choice for environments where fire safety is the absolute top priority. It is heavily specified in public infrastructure, particularly across European and Latin American markets (such as Peru and Chile). Typical applications include hospitals, shoppings, aeroportos, underground transit systems, and enclosed industrial control rooms. In the event of a fire, the sheath will not emit toxic, corrosive gases or thick black smoke, ensuring safe evacuation and protecting sensitive electronic equipment.

Both cables share the same copper conductor and XLPE insulation, meaning their electrical capacity and temperature ratings are identical. The primary difference is the material of the outer jacket:

  • N2XY uses a standard PVC sheath. It is cost-effective but will release toxic halogen gases and heavy smoke when burned.
  • N2XOH uses a Halogen-Free (OH) bainha, making it the safer, premium alternative required by modern building codes for densely populated enclosed spaces.

The notation “1x”, “2x”, ou “3xrefers to the number of individual cores inside the cable jacket, followed by the cross-sectional area of the copper in square millimeters (mm²). While tiny 1mm² sizes (por exemplo, 1×1, 2×1) exist for light signaling and control wiring, standard 0.6/1kV power distribution typically starts at 1.5mm². The most utilized configurations include:

  • Single-Core (1x): Such as 1×1.5 mm² up to 1×300 mm². These are heavily used for main power feeds, heavy machinery, and complex switchgear routing where individual phases are pulled separately.
  • Two-Core (2x): Such as 2×1.5 mm² or 2×2.5 mm². Commonly used for standard single-phase power supply without a dedicated grounding core.
  • Three-Core (3x): Such as 3×1.5 mm², 3×2.5 mm², or 3×120 mm². These are the industry standards for three-phase industrial power systems, feeding large motors, distribution panels, and heavy HVAC units.

While the XLPE insulation provides excellent moisture resistance, the halogen-free outer sheath is generally not as mechanically rugged as standard PVC or steel-armored cables. Portanto, if N2XOH is buried underground, it must be installed inside protective conduits or buried cable ducts to prevent mechanical damage from rocks, soil pressure, or rodents.

N2XOH cable falls under the EU’s unified low-smoke zero-halogen (LSZH) cable category and fully complies with the EN50525-2-11 European standard for low-voltage power cables. Além disso, it carries mandatory CE marking for EU markets and EAC certification for Eurasian Union regions — ensuring you avoid non-compliance delays during project inspections or customs clearance.

Its rated voltage of 0.6/1kV matches the requirements of most low-voltage power distribution systems. In addition, this voltage rating means the cable works seamlessly for general power supply tasks in commercial and industrial settings without requiring additional voltage derating.

The outer sheath uses low-smoke zero-halogen (LSZH) flame-retardant compound, typically black for outdoor UV resistance. In the event of a fire, this sheath releases very little smoke and produces no toxic halogen gases. This is a critical safety advantage in high-occupancy spaces such as offices, shopping centres, and hospitals, where smoke inhalation and corrosive gas damage to electronics are primary concerns during fire incidents.

N2XOH cable is not suitable for all installation environments, and understanding its limitations prevents costly specification errors.

Primeiro, the cable is not rated for direct burial underground. Without armour protection, it cannot withstand the crush pressure, moisture exposure, and root penetration that direct-burial applications require. For underground runs, a steel wire armoured (SWA) or aluminium wire armoured (AWA) cable to IEC 60502-1 is the appropriate specification.

Segundo, N2XOH is not suitable for continuous immersion in water or permanently wet underground environments.

Third, for outdoor exposed installation, the cable requires additional mechanical protection against direct sunlight UV degradation and physical impact. Although the standard black sheath provides some UV resistance, prolonged unprotected outdoor exposure is not within the cable’s rated installation category.
