What is N2XH Cable?

N2XH is a European low-voltage power cable designation for fixed installations that need halogen-free and low-smoke fire behavior. It should be quoted against the project standard, not only by product name.

N2XH cables are ideal for fixed installations in dry, úmido, or wet environments. They are widely used in indoor applications, particularly in heavily populated areas like schools, hospitais, aeroportos, and industrial plants. They can also be installed outdoors on cable trays or brackets, provided they are shielded from direct, prolonged sunlight (unless specifically UV-resistant variants are requested).

The primary difference lies in the insulation and sheathing materials, which determine their fire safety performance. NYY cables use PVC (Cloreto de Polivinila), which releases toxic, corrosive black smoke when burned. N2XH cables feature XLPE insulation and a Halogen-Free Flame Retardant (HFFR / LSZH) bainha. Em caso de incêndio, N2XH cables do not emit toxic gases and produce very little smoke, making them mandatory for public buildings and critical infrastructure where safe evacuation is a priority.

LSZH stands for Low Smoke Zero Halogen, and HFFR stands for Halogen-Free Flame Retardant. Both terms indicate that the cable’s outer sheath is manufactured from compounds that do not contain halogens (like chlorine or fluorine). When exposed to high heat or fire, these cables restrict flame propagation and prevent the release of dangerous, vision-obscuring smoke and corrosive acids that can destroy sensitive electronic equipment.

Não, standard N2XH cables are not designed for direct burial in the earth or directly into water. While they are highly durable, they lack the specific mechanical armor or water-blocking layers required for direct ground burial. If they must be routed underground, they must be installed inside protective conduits, pipes, or cable ducts.

Thanks to the robust XLPE (Polietileno Reticulado) isolamento, N2XH cables can safely operate at a continuous maximum conductor temperature of 90°C. In the event of a short circuit, they can withstand temperatures up to 250°C for a maximum of 5 segundos, offering superior thermal capacity compared to standard PVC cables.
