Câble N2XY
Câble N2XY is a 0.6/1 kV copper power cable with XLPE insulation and a PVC outer sheath. It is designed for fixed low-voltage power distribution in industrial plants, bâtiments commerciaux, infrastructure, systèmes utilitaires, cable ducts and protected underground routes.
The cable is available in single-core and multicore constructions. N2XY-J versions include a green/yellow protective conductor, while N2XY-O versions do not. XLPE insulation provides reliable thermal performance, and the PVC sheath gives practical protection for general indoor and outdoor fixed installations.

N2XY Cable Applications
N2XY is used for fixed power distribution where a robust XLPE/PVC cable is required. It can be installed on cable trays, in ducts and conduits, inside buildings, in industrial service areas and in protected outdoor routes.
- Installations industrielles, workshops and process facilities.
- Commercial buildings, warehouses and utility rooms.
- Low-voltage distribution boards and equipment connections.
- Infrastructure, water-treatment and energy projects.
- Cable ducts and protected underground power routes.
Because standard N2XY is unarmoured, exposed routes with impact, crushing or excavation risk may require conduit, covers or an armoured cable. It is intended for fixed installation rather than continuous movement or portable equipment.
N2XY vs N2XH and NYY Cable
N2XY, N2XH and NYY are all fixed power cables, but their insulation and sheath materials suit different project requirements. N2XY combines XLPE insulation with a PVC sheath. N2XH uses a halogen-free sheath system, while NYY normally uses PVC for both insulation and sheath.
| Fonctionnalité | N2XY | N2XH | NY |
|---|---|---|---|
| Isolation | XLPE | XLPE | PVC |
| Gaine extérieure | PVC | Halogen-free low-smoke compound | PVC |
| Typical use | General fixed power distribution | Projects requiring LSZH performance | General PVC power distribution |
| Température normale du conducteur | Commonly 90°C | Commonly 90°C | Commonly 70°C |
| Main selection point | XLPE thermal performance with PVC sheath | Low smoke and halogen-free requirements | Conventional PVC construction |
N2XH is normally selected when low-smoke and halogen-free performance is specified. NYY remains a conventional PVC cable option. The project cable schedule and fire requirements determine which construction is appropriate.
N2XY Cable Performance and Installation
The XLPE insulation used in N2XY cable is commonly designed for a maximum conductor operating temperature of 90°C. This provides a higher thermal rating than conventional PVC-insulated NYY cable. Actual current-carrying capacity still depends on conductor size, méthode d'installation, température ambiante, cable grouping and soil conditions.
The PVC outer sheath offers resistance to normal moisture and general installation conditions. Outdoor versions commonly use a black PVC sheath, with UV resistance and environmental performance defined by the cable specification. Minimum bending radius and pulling force depend on cable diameter and construction.
N2XY can be installed underground when the cable construction and local installation rules allow it. Since it is normally unarmoured, direct-burial routes may require ducts, mechanical covers or another protective system. An armoured power cable is more suitable where integral impact protection is required.
FAQs of XWA N2XY Cable
What does the N2XY cable designation mean?
N2XY is a VDE-style power cable designation. N indicates a cable made to a recognized national standard, 2X indicates XLPE insulation, and Y indicates a PVC outer sheath. The cable normally uses copper conductors and is supplied for fixed low-voltage power distribution.
What is the difference between N2XY-J and N2XY-O?
N2XY-J includes a green/yellow protective conductor. N2XY-O does not include a green/yellow protective conductor. The core identification must match the circuit and installation design.
What is N2XY Cable used for?
N2XY is used for fixed power distribution in industrial plants, bâtiments commerciaux, infrastructure, utilitaires, cable trays, ducts and protected underground routes. It is not designed as a portable or continuously flexible cable.
Can N2XY Cable be installed outdoors or underground?
Oui. N2XY can be used in suitable outdoor and underground fixed installations. Because it is normally unarmoured, routes exposed to mechanical damage may need ducts, couvercles ou une construction de câble armé séparée.
What is the difference between N2XY and N2XH Cable?
Both cables normally use copper conductors and XLPE insulation. N2XY has a PVC outer sheath, while N2XH uses a halogen-free low-smoke sheath. N2XH is used where the project requires LSZH fire performance.
What is the difference between N2XY and NYY Cable?
N2XY uses XLPE insulation and a PVC sheath. NYY normally uses PVC insulation and a PVC sheath. The XLPE insulation in N2XY commonly supports a 90°C conductor operating temperature, compared with the typical 70°C rating of PVC insulation.
What is the voltage and temperature rating of N2XY Cable?
N2XY is commonly rated 0.6/1 kV, with a normal maximum conductor operating temperature of 90°C. Exact installation temperature, short-circuit rating and current capacity depend on the approved cable design and installation conditions.
What core configurations does N2XY Cable use?
N2XY Cable uses single-core and multicore constructions, including versions with or without a green/yellow protective conductor. Typical configurations include 1-core, 2-cœur, 3-cœur, 4-core and 5-core power cables across a range of conductor sizes.
