NA2XS2Y Cable

NA2XS2Y cable is an aluminium-conductor, single-core MV cable with screened XLPE insulation, a copper wire screen and PE outer sheath for fixed power distribution.

This aluminium/XLPE/PE construction serves utility feeders, industrial supply and substation connections. For routes requiring dedicated water blocking, the (F) and (FL) variants add their respective moisture barriers.

Reference installation: one circuit, touching trefoil, screens earthed at both ends; air 30°C without direct sun; soil 20°C, depth 0.7 m, thermal resistivity 1.0 K·m/W wet and 2.5 K·m/W dry; no nearby heat sources. Maximum reference conductor temperature: 90°C.

The reference uses 5.5 mm nominal insulation. PE sheath thickness is 2.5 mm through the listed 500 mm² size, 2.6 mm at 630 mm² and 2.8 mm at 1000 mm². All dimensions and mass are construction-specific.

Phase Size, Screen Area and Complete Cable Mass

In 1×240/25, 240 mm² identifies the aluminium phase conductor and 25 mm² the separate metallic screen. Screen area is selected for earth-fault duty and bonding.

For the selected 240/25 reference, diameter is approximately 39 mm and mass 1.671 kg/m. A 500 m length contains approximately 835.5 kg of finished cable; drum and packing mass are added for shipment.

Changing from copper to aluminium affects conductor size, current rating, voltage drop and connector selection. Finished diameter also determines entry space and handling requirements.

Aluminium Connections and Copper Screening

The aluminium conductor carries phase current inside the insulation. The copper screen sits outside the semiconductive insulation screen, with a separate connection at the cable end.

Lugs and connectors are selected for the aluminium conductor form and size. A copper equipment connection uses a compatible transition system, with preparation, tools and crimping or tightening procedures specified by the connector manufacturer.

Termination kits also have an insulation-diameter range. A kit selected only from conductor area can miss that range. For the selected 240/25 construction, the reference insulation diameter is approximately 30.4 mm; it is different from the 39 mm overall diameter used for the outer cable entry.

PE, PVC and Water-Blocked Alternatives

Related cableConstruction difference
NA2XSY cableAluminium screened MV cable with PVC outer sheath rather than PE.
N2XS2Y cableCopper phase conductor with XLPE insulation and PE sheath.
NA2XS(F)2Y cableLongitudinal water-blocking components added to the specified aluminium construction.
NA2XS(FL)2YLongitudinal water blocking combined with a laminated radial moisture barrier.

The PE sheath provides outer protection. Dedicated water-blocking layers and mechanical armour are additional construction options for routes that require them.

PE is halogen-free, while low-smoke and flame-retardant performance require the specified material system and tests. Building and tunnel routes follow their applicable fire-performance requirements.

Underground Routes and Fixed Distribution

NA2XS2Y is used in fixed underground networks, ducts, cable-management systems and industrial distribution where its declared sheath and installation requirements fit the route. Ground conditions determine whether direct burial is appropriate; rock, impact, excavation exposure or concentrated loads can require additional protection.

Flat or trefoil formation, spacing, neighbouring circuits and screen bonding determine circuit losses and thermal conditions. The table uses the stated reference arrangement; duct banks and other layouts use the applicable current-rating calculation.

Pulling loads and bending limits follow the actual cable geometry, pulling method and accessory requirements. See MV cable bending radius and pulling tension for the route-planning relationships.

Manufacturing Definition and Test Scope

The manufacturing definition identifies conductor material and form, insulation and sheath dimensions, the metallic-screen arrangement, voltage designation and applicable tests. The relevant schedule covers resistance, insulation and discharge performance, as well as the oversheath requirements of the agreed design.

The official publication scope describes the fixed-distribution cable framework. The project specification identifies applicable HD/VDE or IEC requirements, tests and any required product approvals.

NA2XS2Y Cable Questions

Why does an aluminium cable have a copper screen?

The aluminium phase conductor carries load current, while the copper wire screen performs its specified electrical and earth-fault duties outside the insulation.

What changes between NA2XS2Y and NA2XSY?

NA2XS2Y uses a PE sheath; NA2XSY uses PVC. The sheath choice affects the installation environment and specified fire-performance properties.

Is ordinary NA2XS2Y longitudinally water blocked?

The (F) version adds dedicated longitudinal water-blocking components in the screen region. Standard NA2XS2Y uses the basic PE-sheathed construction.

Can a 240 mm2 copper connection be used for 240 mm2 NA2XS2Y?

The connector must be suitable for aluminium, the conductor form and its dimensions. Connections to copper equipment use a compatible transition system and the specified preparation method.
