    Oil-immersed transformers use transformer oil as both coolant and insulation. They offer higher capacity, better overload capability, and lower cost per kVA, making them the preferred choice for outdoor substations, power grid applications, and large industrial installations.

    Dry-type (cast resin) transformers use epoxy resin insulation and require no oil containment systems. They are safer for indoor installation in buildings, hospitals, data centres, and metro systems where fire risk must be minimised. For capacities above 10MVA or voltages above 35kV, oil-immersed is generally more economical. For indoor urban environments requiring low noise and fire safety, dry-type is recommended.
