NA2XS(F)2Y cable is a single-core medium-voltage power cable with a stranded aluminium conductor, screened XLPE insulation, copper wire screen and black PE outer sheath. The (F) construction includes longitudinal water-blocking components in the screen area.
Fixed distribution feeders, substations and industrial power routes use this cable type where the installation design calls for an aluminium conductor and a water-blocked screened core. Conductor size, screen area, voltage and route conditions define the final configuration.

Single-core aluminium/XLPE/copper-wire-screen/PE, 12/20(24) kV. In 1×240/25, 240 mm² identifies the phase conductor and 25 mm² the metallic screen.
Reference ampacity: one circuit, touching trefoil; air 30°C; ground 20°C, thermal resistivity 1.0 K·m/W and burial depth 0.7 m. Reference maximum conductor temperature: 90°C. Ducts, grouped circuits and bonding require a project calculation.
Longitudinal water blocking and three single-core circuits
Swellable components in the screen region restrict water travel along the cable after moisture enters. A radial barrier or water-blocked conductor can be specified separately; sheath damage requires repair.
The notation 3×1×240 identifies three separate single-core cables, each with a 240 mm² conductor. Each cable has its own sheath, cable entry and screen connection.
Applications and Installation Conditions
Typical applications include utility feeders, transformer-substation connections and industrial distribution. The route design covers mechanical protection, thermal conditions, end sealing and aluminium-compatible connections. Indoor fire requirements determine the appropriate sheath and tests.
The test schedule covers conductor resistance, insulation, partial discharge, sheath integrity and the specified longitudinal water-blocking performance. The official IEC scope describes the fixed-distribution cable framework.
NA2XS(F)2Y and Related Constructions
| Model | Main difference |
|---|---|
| NA2XSY cable | Aluminium conductor and PVC outer sheath instead of PE; longitudinal water blocking is not specified by the NA2XSY designation. |
| N2XS2Y cable | Copper conductor instead of aluminium, with XLPE insulation and a PE sheath; longitudinal water blocking is not specified by the N2XS2Y designation. |
| NA2XS(FL)2Y | Adds a laminated metallic moisture barrier beneath the PE sheath, providing radial moisture protection in addition to longitudinal water blocking. |
NA2XS(F)2Y Cable FAQs
What does (F) mean in NA2XS(F)2Y?
The (F) designation identifies longitudinal water blocking in the specified cable region. A radial barrier and conductor water blocking are additional construction features.
Does an aluminium conductor mean an aluminium screen?
The reference construction uses an aluminium phase conductor and a separate copper wire screen. Screen area follows earth-fault duty and bonding requirements.
Is 3×1×240 the same as a three-core cable?
3×1×240 means three separate single-core cables. A three-core design places three phase cores inside one common outer sheath.
