APPLICATION
ACAR (Aluminum Conductor, Aluminum Alloy Reinforced) conductors are engineered for high-efficiency overhead power transmission and distribution in low & medium voltage networks, combining the high conductivity of aluminum with the superior strength of aluminum alloy cores for optimal performance. They are widely used in:
- Long-distance overhead transmission lines for bulk power transfer
- Urban and rural power grid renovation and expansion projects
- Coastal and industrial areas with high corrosion risk
- Solar and wind farm grid connection for renewable energy integration
- Rural electrification and secondary distribution lines
- Hilly, mountainous, and high-tension overhead line installations
These conductors can be installed on transmission towers, utility poles, and long-span structures, offering excellent resistance to atmospheric corrosion, mechanical fatigue, and environmental aging, with a longer service life than traditional ACSR conductors in many operating environments.
CONSTRUCTION
- Core: High-strength heat-treated aluminum-magnesium-silicon alloy (Al-Mg-Si 6201-T81) for superior tensile strength and sag control
- Outer Strands: Pure aluminum (1350-H19) for high electrical conductivity, concentrically stranded around the alloy core
- Stranding Structure: Concentric lay stranded construction with uniform lay length for consistent mechanical and electrical performance
- Surface Finish: Smooth, oxide-free surface for optimal electrical contact and enhanced corrosion resistance
- Permanent Marking: Continuous length marking, alloy grade, size, and standard compliance printed along the conductor length
CHARACTERISTICS
- Voltage Rating: Suitable for LV/MV overhead lines up to 36 kV (customizable for higher voltage transmission networks)
- Temperature Rating:
- Continuous operating: 90°C
- Emergency overload: 120°C (short duration)
- Mechanical Performance: High tensile strength (min. 295 MPa for standard grade), excellent sag control for long-span installations
- Corrosion Resistance: Superior atmospheric corrosion resistance compared to ACSR, ideal for coastal, industrial pollution, and high-humidity environments
- Electrical Performance: Higher conductivity than steel-reinforced conductors, with stable DC resistance and excellent current-carrying capacity for efficient power distribution
- Weight Advantage: Lighter than equivalent ACSR conductors, reducing tower load and lowering installation costs for long-span projects
STANDARDS
- ASTM B524: Standard Specification for Concentric-Lay-Stranded Aluminum Conductors, Aluminum Alloy Reinforced (ACAR) for Overhead Electrical Transmission
- IEC 61089: Round wire concentric lay overhead electrical stranded conductors
- BS EN 50182: European standard for round wire concentric lay overhead electrical stranded conductors
- ICEA S-66-524: North American standard for overhead aluminum alloy conductors
- AS/NZS 1531: Australian/New Zealand standard for overhead stranded aluminum alloy conductors
