HWA POWER & CABLE | ALUMINIUM WIRE ARMOURED CONSTRUCTIONS
XLPE/AWA/PVC кабель is a power-cable construction with XLPE insulation, aluminium wire armour and a PVC outer sheath. It is commonly specified for single-core AC circuits that need integral mechanical protection without ordinary steel wire armour around each phase.
For a single-core AC feeder, we would consider armour material early: mechanical protection and magnetic losses are both part of the decision. AWA uses non-ferromagnetic aluminium wires, while the phase conductor can still be copper. CU/XLPE/PVC/AWA/PVC describes that copper-conductor arrangement; screened MV versions add voltage-specific electrical screens.

XLPE/AWA/PVC layer arrangements
PVC bedding separates the insulated core or screened assembly from the armour. In an MV design, conductor and insulation semiconductive screens control the electric field, and a metallic screen serves its specified electrical duty.
- Power conductor
- Copper or aluminium as specified. AWA identifies a separate mechanical layer; it does not define the phase-conductor metal.
- XLPE insulation
- The voltage-rated electrical insulation. Its thickness and required field-control layers belong to the selected voltage design.
- Electrical screens
- Present where the cable design requires them. Copper tape or wire screen and aluminium armour are not interchangeable components.
- PVC bedding
- An inner covering over the insulated or screened assembly that provides a base for the armour wires.
- Aluminium wire armour
- A non-ferromagnetic mechanical-protection layer for the stated circuit and installation conditions.
- PVC гадна бүрхүүл
- The protective outer covering. Compound properties, өнгө, weather resistance and fire requirements are specified separately.
Why AWA is used around individual AC phases
A single-core cable carries the current of one conductor. A ferromagnetic armour surrounding that phase interacts with its alternating magnetic field and can add magnetic losses and heating. Aluminium avoids that ferromagnetic armour mechanism, which is why AWA is commonly associated with single-core AC power cables.
Metallic screens, armour bonding, phase formation and nearby metalwork also affect circuit losses and induced voltages. These are assessed together when the single-core circuit is designed.
In a multicore cable, the phase conductors share one assembly. XLPE/SWA/PVC кабель provides the related steel-wire-armoured option for that arrangement.
Large-section reference sizes for one LV construction
Recommended Reference Data: single-core compacted class 2 copper, XLPE insulation, PVC bedding, AWA and PVC sheath, rated 0.6/1 кВ. Published reference dimensions support preliminary planning; final supply data follows the agreed XWA datasheet.
| Core × conductor section (mm²) | Armour wire diameter (mm) | Overall cable diameter (mm) | Approx. mass (kg/km) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 × 150 | 1.6 | 25.1 | 1753 |
| 1 × 240 | 1.6 | 31.3 | 2841 |
| 1 × 300 | 1.6 | 33.7 | 3386 |
| 1 × 400 | 2.0 | 38.4 | 4345 |
| 1 × 500 | 2.0 | 42.0 | 5428 |
| 1 × 630 | 2.0 | 46.4 | 6938 |
Conductor shape affects finished diameter and mass. The table covers a compacted conductor; screened MV constructions have additional layers and their own dimensions.
The construction datasheet defines layer thicknesses and installation limits. Current rating depends on phase formation, spacing, loading, thermal conditions and bonding.
LV and screened MV construction options
| Construction example | Electrical scope | Information that defines the finished cable |
|---|---|---|
| CU/XLPE/PVC/AWA/PVC | Unscreened LV power-cable design | Хүчдэл, copper conductor class and shape, section, insulation, bedding, armour and sheath dimensions. |
| CU/XLPE/CTS/PVC/AWA/PVC | Screened MV power-cable design | Conductor/insulation screens, copper tape screen duty, PVC separation sheath, bonding and voltage-matched accessories. |
| AL/XLPE/…/AWA/PVC | Aluminium phase-conductor option | The AL prefix changes the conductor; AWA still describes the armour. Dimensions and terminations require their own data. |
The examples cover LV and MV configurations. Explore the medium-voltage cable ranges and N2XSY screened cable for related electrical designs. Higher-voltage systems require their own cable, accessory and qualification specification.
Fixed feeders, transformer connections and industrial routes
High-current fixed feeders
Single-core phase cables can provide an alternative arrangement where a large multicore assembly is difficult to route or terminate. AWA provides integral armour; phase formation and cable supports remain part of the circuit design.
Transformer and switchgear circuits
Single-core armoured cables can connect transformers, switchgear and distribution equipment where the circuit requires integral mechanical protection.
Ducts and underground routes
The complete design may suit fixed duct or buried routes with a mechanical-protection requirement. Soil conditions, moisture barriers, chemical exposure and thermal performance are separate from the presence of AWA.
The constructions shown are for fixed power routes. Water blocking, chemical resistance and fire performance can be specified to match the route; moving or subsea service needs a dedicated cable design.
Glands, bonding and support for single-core circuits
| Interface | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Cable glands and entry hardware | The selected gland must accommodate the actual armour material, wire size, bedding diameter and sheath dimensions. A nominal conductor section alone does not define the gland. |
| Ferromagnetic entry plates | Individual AC conductors and surrounding steelwork need a layout that addresses induced heating; an AWA cable does not remove that interface requirement. |
| Screens, armour and bonding | Earthing, induced voltages and fault duty require a coordinated design. Armour is not automatically a sufficient protective conductor or a replacement for a metallic screen. |
| Phase formation and cleats | Flat or trefoil arrangement, spacing and restraint affect thermal performance and short-circuit mechanical duty. They are system inputs, not supplied by the AWA abbreviation. |
Project installation instructions take precedence over a generic bend-factor or accessory table. For route planning context, see cable bending radius and pulling tension.
Construction standards and evidence
IEC 60502-1 covers the relevant LV product range, IEC 60502-2 the specified MV range, болон IEC 60228 the conductors. The applicable edition and project specification define construction and test requirements.
The official fixed-installation standard scope describes the IEC 60502-2 coverage for power cables used in fixed distribution installations.
Project configuration with XWA Power & Cable
XWA supports power cable production to customer drawings and project specifications. Conductor processing, insulation extrusion, armouring, sheathing and routine testing form part of our manufacturing operations in Henan, Хятад.
For single-core AWA circuits, overall diameter and armour dimensions determine gland selection and equipment entry space. Screen connections and armour bonding must also match the termination design.
Finished diameter and cable mass are also handling inputs. Drum length, bending space, installation access and gross reel weight can constrain delivery planning even when the electrical section has already been selected.

AWA construction questions
What does XLPE/AWA/PVC cable mean?
It describes XLPE insulation, aluminium wire armour and a PVC outer sheath. The conductor material, bedding, voltage and any electrical screens complete the cable specification.
Does AWA mean the cable has an aluminium conductor?
AWA identifies the aluminium armour wires. A copper-conductor version is CU/XLPE/PVC/AWA/PVC; an AL prefix identifies an aluminium phase conductor.
Why is AWA common on single-core AC cables?
Aluminium is non-ferromagnetic, avoiding the magnetic-armour loss mechanism associated with ordinary steel around an individual AC phase. Bonding, induced voltages and nearby metalwork still require system assessment.
Can the same structure description cover medium voltage?
Тиймээ. Screened MV designs add voltage-appropriate semiconductive layers and a metallic screen, with dimensions and accessories matched to the rated voltage.
Is aluminium wire armour an electrical screen?
Aluminium wire armour protects mechanically. The copper tape or wire screen performs a separate electrical duty, with its own section, connections and fault-current requirement.
Is AWA cable suitable for transformer connections?
AWA cable can suit fixed external connections between transformers and switchgear. The voltage, conductor arrangement, termination interfaces and route conditions determine the configuration.
