N2XSH cable combines a copper conductor, screened XLPE insulation and a low-smoke, halogen-free sheath for fixed medium-voltage distribution. It is relevant to industrial feeders, substation connections and building power routes where smoke and combustion-gas requirements influence the cable specification.
XWA Power & Cable manufactures power cables in China for international projects, with production to customer drawings and cable schedules. Contact us for an N2XSH project quotation.

N2XSH Cable for Industrial and Building Power Routes
The LSZH sheath addresses specified smoke and combustion-gas requirements alongside the electrical duty, making this construction relevant to enclosed industrial and building power routes.
- Industrial distribution: fixed feeders between substations, switchgear and plant power systems where screened MV cable and defined fire behaviour are required.
- Building supply: indoor cable routes with low-smoke and halogen-free requirements, subject to the applicable fire class and installation rules.
- Protected external routes: ducts, trays and other routes only where the declared construction covers exposure, water conditions and mechanical protection.
For indoor-to-outdoor routes, the sheath and cable design are selected for both environments, including UV exposure, burial conditions, moisture protection and the required fire classification.
N2XSH 12/20 kV Reference Dimensions
Recommended Reference Data: one published single-core copper construction with a copper wire screen. These dimensions and masses support preliminary planning; final supply data follows the approved XWA specification.
| Conductor/screen (mm²) | Insulation (mm) | Over insulation (mm) | Minimum sheath (mm) | Approx. OD (mm) | Approx. mass (kg/km) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 x 95/16 | 5.5 | 24.0 | 2.1 | 36.0 | 1965 |
| 1 x 120/16 | 5.5 | 26.0 | 2.1 | 38.0 | 2235 |
| 1 x 150/25 | 5.5 | 27.0 | 2.1 | 39.0 | 2630 |
| 1 x 185/25 | 5.5 | 29.0 | 2.1 | 41.0 | 3035 |
| 1 x 240/25 | 5.5 | 31.0 | 2.1 | 43.0 | 3600 |
| 1 x 300/25 | 5.5 | 33.0 | 2.1 | 46.0 | 4220 |
| 1 x 400/35 | 5.5 | 36.0 | 2.1 | 49.0 | 5230 |
| 1 x 500/35 | 5.5 | 40.0 | 2.1 | 52.0 | 6290 |
The table covers 12/20 kV cable, with maximum system voltage 24 kV. In 1×240/25, 240 mm² is the phase-conductor area and 25 mm² the screen area. Other voltage grades use their own insulation dimensions.
Current rating is calculated for circuit arrangement, screen bonding, ambient temperature, soil or duct conditions and neighbouring heat sources.
N2XSH Project Support from XWA
XWA works from project drawings, BOQs and cable datasheets to define the proposed manufacturing scope. The factory overview introduces our cable production, inspection and export support.
Construction matched to the cable schedule
Conductor section, screen area, voltage grade, insulation dimensions and sheath requirements are defined together in the agreed manufacturing datasheet.

Testing and documentation agreed with the order
The inspection plan sets the routine tests, records and any project-specific fire or approval requirements. Construction drawings and the agreed test and inspection documents accompany the defined supply scope.

Export packing coordinated with cable lengths
Cable lengths and finished mass determine the drum schedule and handling plan. Drum marking and shipping documents are coordinated with the destination and order requirements.
N2XSH, N2XSY and N2XS2Y
| Model | Outer-sheath distinction | Relevant specification difference |
|---|---|---|
| N2XSH | Low-smoke, halogen-free sheath | Fire-test performance and installation suitability must be defined for the exact construction. |
| N2XSY cable | PVC sheath | PVC and LSZH have different combustion-gas and material characteristics. |
| N2XS2Y cable | PE sheath | PE sheath protection does not by itself imply a flame-retardant, low-smoke construction. |
| N2XS(F)H / N2XS(FL)H | Halogen-free sheath with additional water barriers | (F) identifies longitudinal water blocking; (FL) additionally identifies a radial moisture barrier in the specified design. |
The comparison concerns copper screened MV constructions. An aluminium-conductor NA2XSH design changes the phase-conductor material as well. Three-core N2XSEH places three screened phase cores inside a common sheath and needs its own dimensional and rating data.
The Two Diameters That Matter at a Termination
The diameter over insulation determines the termination stress-control interface; overall cable diameter determines the outer entry or seal. These dimensions serve different parts of the accessory assembly.
In the selected 240/25 reference, the insulation diameter is 31 mm while the complete cable diameter is approximately 43 mm. Using 43 mm to select an insulation interface confuses those surfaces. Manufacturing tolerances and the accessory’s own specified limits remain part of the fit assessment.
Strippable and bonded semiconductive screens use different preparation methods. The supplied screen type determines the procedure and tools used at the termination.
N2XSH Standards, Fire Performance and Installation Limits
IEC 60502-2 covers MV extruded-insulation power cables within its scope. HD 622 / DIN VDE 0276-622 also covers established halogen-free MV designs. The technical offer identifies the applicable construction standard and test schedule.
Smoke density, combustion gases and flame spread are assessed separately. The official smoke-test description explains IEC 61034-2. Projects requiring a CPR class or continued circuit operation during fire specify the corresponding classification or circuit-integrity evidence.
This unarmoured cable uses route-appropriate mechanical protection. The copper screen performs its electrical duty, while dedicated layers can provide specified water blocking. See the MV cable bending radius and pulling tension guide for handling and route constraints.
N2XSH Specifications and Quotation Questions
Can XWA review an N2XSH cable schedule for quotation?
Yes. XWA accepts cable schedules, BOQs and project specifications for quotation. Voltage, conductor and screen sections, fire requirements, quantity and destination define the proposed order.
What affects the N2XSH cable price per metre?
Conductor and screen sections, voltage grade, sheath requirements, tests, production length and packing determine the cable quotation. Freight follows the agreed delivery basis and destination.
Is N2XSH a fire-resistant cable?
N2XSH uses a low-smoke, halogen-free sheath. Where continued circuit operation during fire is required, the cable needs a suitable fire-resistant design and corresponding circuit-integrity test.
Can N2XH replace medium-voltage N2XSH?
N2XSH has the insulation and electrical screens required for its MV rating. N2XH is a separate LV design; each must be used within its specified voltage and application scope.
